![]() People often perceive them as a group or pattern. Similarity occurs when objects look similar to one another. The principle of similarity states that things which share visual characteristics such as shape, size, color, texture, value or orientation will be seen as belonging together. SIMILARITY “Elements that share similar characteristics are perceived as more related than elements that don’t share those characteristics.” For everyone else, it is extremely useful to understand these principles so you can appraise whey one piece of material may be preferable to another in terms of its communicative goal.Īs such I will try to break up these principles over a couple of articles, beginning here. Human perception is all about relationships how things are similar or dissimilar, how they contrast or blend with one another, and how arrangements of things suggest hierarchies and are affected by context.įor Designers and Art Directors, this pretty much sums up what the academic side of role is concerned with. These laws form much of the foundation of the techniques I use in table design and I intend to refer to many of them in this series of articles. Following this research the so-called “Gestalt” laws were established. In the 1930’s the German Gestalt school of psychology investigated how the brain groups and organizes visual shapes. In this blog post I would like to introduce the Gestalt Laws, a set of design rules based on research into perception psychology. Most of these rules are simple and are based on a solid academic foundation. In this series of articles I am going to attempt to explain the rules and the reasons behind them. The first thing to know is that I like to use a set of visual design rules when building charts and tables and I like to understand why the rules make sense. I thought I would share my experience through my blog posts. I get asked by a lot of people how I seem to be able to format my charts and tables so that they look good and still convey the information in the most effective manner.
